You Shall Not Pass *slams staff down*

Like… you want you students to pass their class, right? Maybe sometimes though you want to slow down how fast they are trying to run through materials. Perhaps you want to gateway a quiz or a reading section. I’m going to demonstrate an effective way to ensure that students complete a series of things in the order that you specify.

In order to do this, you’re going to need to have a module populated with the things you want the students to do, and in the order you want the students to do them in. For example, my math module is shown below. I want students to at least have to click the link where the videos are, then they can take a quiz. So I have everything in order. Video Page, Quiz, Video Page, etc

In the upper right hand corner, click the three little dots and go to Edit.

So in the options, the first thing I click is that Students Must Complete All of These Requirements. Then under that, the checkbox for Students must move through requirements in sequential order. This will make sure that students have to follow all of the following requirements, and that its done in order.

Next click on the + Add requirement. You’ll be given a dropdown list of the items in the module. Note that pages and quizzes have different selections.

Below is what the page requirements are. I usually just choose ‘view’. Most of the time students dont realize they can just click through the video and Canvas will be fine with it.

Quiz requirements are shown below. I usually select the minimal score requirement, then set the number of points out of the total for the quiz (you can use decimals).

This is an effective way to guide students along through a given module. I made a Math module this semester that students had to complete. It allowed me to keep from having to go over a lot of things in class, and gave the student the option to work at their own pace. By limiting the order they do things, you make something of a guide to push them through. I also have question banks for my quizzes and allow them to repeat them until they get the specific number of points they need. This keeps them from getting the same questions twice, so they really have to pay attention to what they are doing.

Until next week!
